About This Book
This book is a detective's report.
What is being investigated is not a particular person or a particular company, but a mechanism — one that lets those who manufacture stories avoid responsibility for their consequences, while those who bear the consequences cannot even see the bill. From how a single sentence by Jensen Huang at a Seoul press conference was distorted beyond recognition within 24 hours, to the 25-year cross-border entanglement between Microsoft and Sega; from how AI-generated Schopenhauer comfort texts mimic the shape of "being understood," to how corporate layoff narratives play out a farce in six weeks — the evidence will be laid out piece by piece, the analysis will unfold layer by layer, and the conclusions are yours to draw.
The entire book answers five questions: Who manufactures the narrative? Who pays the bill? What truths does AI expose? What do humans have left? How should we walk the path? Five questions correspond to five parts, moving from the distortion of narratives, the transfer of costs, the lifting of cover stories, the structure of consciousness, to the final choices and the road ahead.
This is not a how-to book on "using AI," nor is it an anxiety-vending machine proclaiming "AI will replace humanity." What it extracts are the invariant structures and laws — how power concentrates, how information is monopolised, how the middle layers are squeezed, how most people unknowingly surrender their capacity for judgement. Technologies will change, platforms will rotate, jargon will update, but the underlying mechanics driving all of this will not.
Once you understand the mechanics, no change in technology can catch you off guard.
"Industry analysis has an expiry date; structural analysis does not. A book is a gift you can send to the future." — Final Chapter
Table of Contents
Prologue: Three Questions
A piece of AI-generated Schopenhauer comfort text, dissected into four layers of formula: invoking authority, emotional reversal, tautological consolation, and conversational closure. This bestseller-generating machine is the book's first exhibit. The five questions begin here.
Part I: Metamorphosis — How Narratives Are Forged
Information distorts in transmission — this is not a phenomenon unique to any era, but a structural feature of human communication. Yet "structural" does not mean "innocent." Behind every layer of distortion lies an economic motive.
- Chapter 1: The News You Read Is Not the Original A single sentence by Jensen Huang at a Seoul press conference, passed through an English wire service, Chinese financial media, and social media in three layers of translation, became unrecognisable within 24 hours. A day's worth of distortion demonstrates the smallest unit of narrative manufacture. This chapter sets the tonal baseline for the entire book.
- Chapter 2: Game Over: The Cross-Border Entanglement of Microsoft and Sega From a 1998 partnership announcement to the 2003 talent acquisition, a 25-year chain of cause and effect. Cooperation, learning, abandonment, replacement, absorption of legacy — line them up, and emotionally it is impossible not to conclude "they were betrayed." But the truth is more complex than the emotion.
Part II: The Bill — Who Is Paying for the Story
Those who manufacture narratives need not take responsibility for their consequences. Those who bear the consequences cannot even see the bill. The monetary account, the human account, the account of judgement — every single one must be settled.
- Chapter 3: AI Begins Writing Itself — But Who Is Paying the Power Bill? Anthropic uses Claude to write the next generation of Claude. The spending power of gamers and the cross-subsidisation of tech giants are the two fuels sustaining AI. Both are narrowing. Who will the electricity bill ultimately fall on?
- Chapter 4: AI Narrative Economics: When "Replacement" Becomes a Business Block lays off 4,000 people and the stock price jumps 24%; six weeks later, they quietly rehire. CNBC tallies 23 companies citing "AI layoffs" — 56% saw their stock price fall, not rise. Narratives have a half-life. The market is learning to tell the difference.
- Chapter 5: Information Feudalism: From Free Content to Knowledge Serfs The rise and fall of PC Magazine demonstrates the ancient mechanism of information stratification. AI spirituality posts, compliance culture, narrative-rights monopoly — functional collusion requires no meeting minutes. The endpoint of education is that you no longer need it. The design of consumption is that you always need more.
- Chapter 6: Someone Else's Tuition — The Ring 0 Landmine Fourteen years, three waves of guinea pigs, one unexploded ordnance. Win32's forty-year foot-binding, the structural boundary of Ring 3 vs Ring 0, NVIDIA RTX Spark's BIOS dark room — who paid the tuition, who received the diploma, and who is still stepping on the mine.
Part III: The Demon-Revealing Mirror — What AI Exposes
Prose concealed the hollowness of content. Credentials concealed the absence of competence. Frameworks concealed the outsourcing of thought. Corporate rhetoric concealed the operation of power. AI lifts all these covers at once.
- Chapter 7: The Distortion of Learning: Anxiety Is the Best Commodity Knowledge shelf-life shortens → anxiety arbitrage → operation-oriented education → doors without walls → cognitive fault lines. The distortion of education was not caused by AI. AI merely makes it impossible to ignore any longer.
- Chapter 8: Prose Is Not Content; Code Is Not an Asset The dismantling of four propositions: prose ≠ content; frameworks kill architectural thinking; large systems become prisons; AI exposes the truth. When the cost of production approaches zero, only one naked question remains: Do you actually have something to say?
- Chapter 9: The Dead Knot of Corporate Culture Consensus costs, battles over discourse power, post-hoc attribution, the triple function of corporate rhetoric, institutional self-selection. A seismologist who predicts earthquake risk does not thereby have the ability to reinforce every building in the country. AI can accelerate construction, but it cannot accelerate consensus.
- Chapter 10: When Production Approaches Free, What Do Humans Still Need? The complete dissection of the bestseller-generating machine. Five layers of scarcity: tools → direction, answers → judgement, information → world model, content → trust, production → meaning. "The feeling of being understood" and "actually being understood" are two different things.
Part IV: The Line of Defence — Consciousness and Frameworks
The answer is not a particular tool, a particular course, a particular wealth hack. Tools can be replicated, subscribed to, upgraded, downgraded. The one thing that remains cannot.
- Chapter 11: The Blade Is Sharp — But What Are You Cutting? Two kinds of anxiety: the seasoned writer guards the gate; the power user flees. Both remain stuck spinning on the plane of "output." The tautology trap, four types of blade-wielders, and the essence of AI-collaborative writing: "intent" drives "expression."
- Chapter 12: Grasp the Meaning, Forget the Image — Word, Image, Intent A three-layer theory of meaning: "word" (言) is text, "image" (象) is structure, "intent" (意) is consciousness after compression. The weight of fourteen characters. Tautologies vs the white space left after compression. The Taiji gradient. AI can produce word, imitate image, but cannot touch intent.
- Chapter 13: Cognitive Models, Constraints, and the Capacity to Evolve Four facets dissecting the actual operation of "consciousness." The person who has witnessed three generations of platform failures vs the person who has only read the technical documentation. Knowing that WinCE is unsuitable for a game console is worth more than knowing what WinCE can do. The Great Dao is formless — what is truly deep never appears on the surface.
Part V: Choices — The Path and the Person
The first four parts were about dismantling. Dismantling narratives, dismantling bills, dismantling illusions, dismantling abilities. After the dismantling, everything is laid out on the table. This part does not dismantle. It answers: after the choice is made, how do you walk the path?
- Chapter 14: Why "The Benevolent Have No Enemies" Fails, and Why It Still Matters Five utilitarian cuts, the benevolent's defence, the synthesis of four classics (the I Ching, the Tao Te Ching, Mencius, the Analerta), and "knowing it cannot be done yet doing it anyway." Jensen Huang appears three times, three facets, the same person — light and shadow in one body. Not invincible, but having made a choice.
- Chapter 15: The Stupidest Path — Free, Fiction, and Facing the 90% The case of Little Fighter 2, the mathematics of 1–3% conversion rates for free content, and the structural advantages of the novel as a vehicle. Serve the top 10% or face the bottom 90%? This is a choice based on judgement, not charity.
Final Chapter: A Book That Can Reach the Future
Industry analysis has an expiry date; structural analysis does not. From the bestseller-generating machine in the prologue to consciousness in the final chapter — that thing which comes from having lived — cannot be generated. The book completes a loop.
Afterword: About What You Are Doing Right Now
That you have read this far is itself a choice. Content that runs counter to algorithmic logic requires a mode of dissemination that also runs counter to algorithmic logic — through people, not through machines.
Appendix: Sources
A source index for the major facts in each chapter. Chapter 1 teaches you to go back to the original text; this book must itself withstand the same standard.
Who Is This Book For?
The readership of this book is not "niche" — it faces everyone who, amid the flood of information, still wants to judge for themselves. But if you belong to any of the following categories, you will very likely find what you need in this book:
- 🔍 Tech industry professionals — If you are in the midst of the AI wave yet feel there is always a gap between the narrative and reality, this book dismantles the structure of that gap for you. From the half-life of layoff narratives to the techno-politics of Ring 0, these are real problems you will encounter in your career.
- ✍️ Content creators and writers — When AI can produce grammatically correct, structurally complete text in seconds, "being able to write" is no longer a scarce ability. The word–image–intent framework will help you re-understand what "writing" actually means.
- 🏫 Educators and students — Chapter 7 dismantles the system you are living through. How anxiety is commodified, how credentials conceal competence, how "doors without walls" operate — only after understanding these can you judge what you truly need to learn.
- 🎮 Gamers and game industry professionals — Chapters 2 and 6 are written for you. The cross-border entanglement of Microsoft and Sega, NVIDIA's Ring 0 predicament — your gaming console, your development tools, your country's semiconductor policy: why they look the way they do today, the answer lies in a forty-year chain of cause and effect.
- 📊 Managers and decision-makers — Chapter 9 dismantles the dead knot of corporate culture; Chapter 14 discusses the five utilitarian cuts. If you see problems within your organisation but cannot voice them, this book offers not comfort, but analytical tools.
- 📖 General readers / lifelong learners — You do not need to know programming, nor do you need to be an insider. You need only one question: Of everything I read each day, how much of it is true? This book will not answer for you, but it will teach you how to verify for yourself.
Who This Book Is Not For
If what you are looking for is a quick guide to "Learn AI in Three Minutes," this is not that book. If what you are looking for is an anxiety-vending machine proclaiming "AI Will Replace Everyone," this is not that book either. If what you are looking for is confirmation of things you already believe, this book will very likely make you uncomfortable.
But if you are willing to spend an hour or two, follow the arguments through, and after finishing, judge for yourself — rather than being judged — then this book is written for you.
